The current Government House was built between 1827 & 1831. The exterior is rough, red sandstone quarried at Signal Hill, trimmed with English Portland stone. Governor Cochrane was the 1st occupant.

Due to workmen's wages being considered then too high in Newfoundland, workmen in Scotland were chosen to begin! But the completion cost was still five times the original estimate! How scandalous! :-0

Governor Pickmore was the first governor to stay in Newfoundland (at the first Government House) during the winter. He died there in February of 1818, but it was unlikely directly due to hypothermia!

The first Government House was built at Fort Townshend in 1781. It was made of wood, and was intended to be only a summer house for the governors. Winter inhabitants complained that it was very cold!

The early governors of Newfoundland (before 1780s) were British naval officers who were here only during the summers. They usually lived aboard their flagships, which were anchored in the harbour.
